Chris Poggiali and I wrote These Fists Break Bricks about kung fu movies coming to America and it’s been a long road getting it into stores. The first edition came out from Mondo who then got sold to Funko who had no interest in publishing books and so we got the rights back and wound up at Running Press, who are issuing this new, revised edition with tons of extra material on July 8th. And this is the launch party! I’m enormously proud of this book and it’s packed with stories that have never been told before, from the CIA secretly funding Ed Wood-level karate movies in Japan, to the New York Times fabricating a white panic over Black street gangs that didn’t exist, David Duke putting out ads for Black martial arts that didn’t exist, judo fights on the lawns of Hollywood stars, pipe bombs, porn barons, and a whole lot more. It’s packed with art and tells a story no one’s ever put all in one place before. Think of it as Paperbacks from Hell but for kung fu movies!
